These photographs were made in and round Mobile, Alabama when I was in town supporting FEMA's hurricane recovery efforts. The very first photograph is of some of my colleagues when we were eating dinner at Ed's Shed. The next few are shots taken outside of the Arthur R. Outlaw Convention Center, which was the location of the JFO (Joint Field Office). I was able to take an afternoon off before I flew home and captured some photographs of the USS Alabama museum before heading on to record some of the local devastation wrought by Hurricane Ivan. The photographs after the USS Alabama show the piles of debris and trees stacked by the side of the roads for future pickup. The final series of photographs is of Gulf Shores, the location where Ivan made landfall. The storm surge was between 14 and 20 feet, which carried hundreds of thousands of tons of sand from the beach and deposited it among the first few blocks of homes. The photograph of the Ford Focus shows just how high the sand got, which is 2-3 feet in most places and likely deeper in others. The sand was piled up along the side of the road just like snow after a heavy snowstorm. It is amazing how much devastation air and water can create in such a short time. |
